For The Freshies To Read Around Christmas

I know this is the beginning of the school year. I know a lot of us are fresh as a daisy and ready to start off the year with a spring in our step and a smile on our face. However, there may be a few who are already overwhelmed. Whether it's the stress of getting your room ready or the uncertainty of a new position, you already feel a little stale. For the latter, this post is for you right now and in the moment. But you fresh flowers better save this one for around Christmas because you'll need it! Or sooner!

Being a Christian doesn't automatically make our lives easier. It's a nice thought that God would take away our struggles when we begin to follow Him but that's not His plan for us. Why would we need Him if we didn't have problems? We wouldn't. Struggle maintains our need for God and our need for Him maintains our relationship with Him.

I'm pretty sure not many would disagree that we, as public educators, are quite familiar with struggle. We struggle to help the student who has fallen behind. We scramble to find time to keep up with our ever increasing duties. We strive for ways to balance our work and personal lives. We attempt one strategy after the other to find what works with that one student who can't seem to behave. We lie awake at night worried about our kids we know do not go home to a safe environment. It can get completely overwhelming.

But guess what. We aren't in this alone. I frequently forget that I have the power of the Holy Spirit living inside of me. The very same power that turned water to wine, healed the sick and afflicted, walked on water, fed the 5,000, raised the dead......I have to say that one more time. This power RAISED THE DEAD y'all!! That power lives in me ready and available for my use! If we who are believers in the Faith have this power, why do so many of us live as though we are defeated?

The fact of the matter is, we are never defeated. Even when we are at our wits end with our jobs and our families and that student and that coworker, when we are hanging by the last thread of our souls and there is no answer in sight, we are VICTORIOUS! Push aside those feelings of the flesh and listen to the power inside of your soul! You are not alone! You are not beat! You have not lost! God is there not only ready to lend a hand but ready to bear your weight as you jump into his arms with all the weariness you have left.

Exodus 14:14 says, "The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still." And just maybe, when we have done everything we possibly can and we are overcome with exhaustion, and hope seems lost, maybe, just maybe, our victory comes when we are still; when we rely on His power to fight for us.
